:
  • from Charles van Buren -- TOP 1000 REVIEWER : The worst European colony in Africa ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from hatuletoh -- A horrifying bit of forgotten history : Like most Americans--and indeed most Westerners, I believe it's safe to say--my knowledge of African history is quite poor. And is always the case when one has a paucity of historical knowledge, one looks at a region's current socioeconomic conditions and just assumes those conditions arose organically, have always prevailed, and most insidiously, can't be changed by any efforts we might make in the present. This is, of course, dangerously false but it's also a natural thought process. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2015 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from D. D. LeDu -- A great example of an effective polemic : Written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published in 1909, "The Crime of the Congo" is a polemic about the horrors of Belgian rule in central Africa. He details, with considerable repetition and vituperativeness, the systematic exploitation of the native peoples by, first, a private monopoly led by King Leopold III and then by the nation of Belgium. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2012 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Agatha Christie -- An eye opener : This book is an eye opener of what a man can let happen out of greed. I'd never heard of King Leopold. I've never heard of what he did to the Congo area he controlled. He killed 10 million and is never talked about!! How is that possible? ( Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2017 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- An odious awakening : Arthur Co.nail Doyle was a physician and was journalists as well was s a n author. In this treatises his intention was to enlighten the reader understanding of the situation in the Belgium Congo under King Leopold and the push for rubber. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JONO5K1 -- A must read. And to continue your research...investigate the corporations! : A good length - and consequently, it may be finished comfortably within one day.Should you wish to delve deeper - investigate radioactive metals in Katanga district. This is the reason for the continuous state of degradation in the D.R.C. -The British, Americans and Israelis simply replaced the Belgium bloc. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 31, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mark K Jackaman -- A bit of a shocker this one...not a story but an actual report which leaves you feeling sad. : This is a report about the effective takeover of the Congo by Belgium, or more specifically King Leopold, it contains reports by many key witnesses the gist of which all paints a tale of the worst that human nature feels able to justify as being acceptable behaviour...when it really isn't. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tim B -- Not fiction, non-fiction : Doubtless it will shock some, even diehard fans, that 'ACD' was a non-fiction afficionado too. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 25, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jacquesvins -- Unreal, yet real.... Horrible history that so few people are aware of. : No people's have suffered as those of the Congo..... Yet so few people know that wicked past, but this and other books are there to record the evils that can never be repeated anywhere in the world, ever. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- The crimes of The congo : A Belgian king who made money from the rubber industry. It shows how blacks where treated and how a few whites where killed without a trail. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 2020 )
